Behind the Scenes: The Journey of Crafting a Candle

Every Wax Crescent candle begins as more than just an idea—it starts with a memory, a moment, or a meaningful experience. From there, I work to transform that feeling into a scent that connects with not only me but also with my customers. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how I bring my candles to life, one scent at a time.

Inspiration: Turning Memories into Scents

Every candle I create is rooted in something deeply personal—whether it’s a childhood memory, a favorite season, or a special moment that deserves to be cherished. My process starts with asking myself: What smell brings me back there?

For example, my Tobacco & Teakwood candle was inspired by summer evenings in my childhood, catching the sweet scent of my neighbor’s pipe as I played in the yard. Each candle I make is a way to capture these memories and share them with others.

Blending Scents: The Art of Experimentation

The magic of candle-making lies in experimentation. There’s no fixed formula—it’s all about playing with fragrance oils, mixing combinations, and seeing what feels right. I often use perfume sticks to test different blends, searching for complexity and depth in the scent. Once I find a promising combination, I mix it with soy wax to see how it transforms.

This step often surprises me, as adding oils to wax can completely change a scent profile. Sometimes it’s a pleasant surprise, but not always! There have been plenty of missteps along the way (hello, not-so-great smells!).

Testing and Perfecting

Creating a candle isn’t just about finding the right scent; it’s about making sure it burns safely and evenly while delivering a beautiful fragrance.

Cold Throw vs. Hot Throw

  • Cold Throw: The scent a candle gives off when unlit.
  • Hot Throw: The fragrance released when the candle is burning.

These two can be surprisingly different. That’s why I test multiple renditions of a candle, letting it cure for at least a week before lighting it again. This curing process helps the fragrance settle and ensures the candle performs the way I want.

I rarely get it right on the first try. Some candles take months to perfect. In fact, one scent took me nine months of testing and reworking before it finally smelled exactly as I’d hoped. It’s a process of patience and persistence, but the reward is always worth it.

Connecting with Customers Through Storytelling

For me, creating candles isn’t just about the scent—it’s about the story behind it. Each candle I craft carries a piece of my personal history, and I love sharing those stories with my customers.

When you light a Wax Crescent candle, you’re not just enjoying a beautiful fragrance—you’re stepping into a memory. And I invite you to find your own connection to scent. Whether it reminds you of a quiet moment, a loved one, or a special place, every candle is designed to evoke something meaningful.
